The UK's 2040 combustion vehicle ban and what this means for Tesla EVs

The recent news of the proposed ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2040 in the UK has sent shockwaves throughout the motoring trade. Whilst the ban is only on new vehicles, this is a very clear statement of intent from the UK government. This follows on from a similar ban in France, which will come into effect in the same year. 

So how has this come about? At EV Hire, we have our own notions on why the EV revolution is now a reality. 

Tesla’s growth as the premier supplier of EVs:

When Tesla came into being in 2003, electric vehicles were still very much a dream of aspiration and ambition. A huge amount of development from Tesla has shifted the notion of just how capable EVs now are. Tesla has led the way with innovations across all aspects of electric vehicle design and production. Whilst in the early days many simply wrote the company off as a flight of fancy, Tesla are now serious agitators in the vehicle market, leaving combustion vehicle manufacturers such as Ford and General Motors trailing in their wake.
 
Tesla as a company is currently worth over $50 billion. They will only continue to grow. This recent announcement only confirms the inevitable for traditional car manufacturers; Tesla is light years ahead of the competition, building electric vehicles exclusively. EV Hire exists as part of Tesla’s journey.

Investment:

So far this year Tesla has invested an additional $2 billion into their infrastructure. In tandem with this, there is ongoing research/development and the fact that the Model 3 has over half a million pre-orders to date. Many doubted in the beginning that Tesla would be able to design a car that would not only satisfy drivers but also show them something that would change the way that they experience driving. 

This investment extends to the Supercharging network; the expansion of which we expect will become even more rapid in the UK and beyond. The self-drive software at the heart of these EVs has seen comprehensive testing and is now a proven concept. EV Hire expects in that legislators would be seriously considering allowing automated driving eventually to become law. The existing Tesla models all have the automated software built into them. It is just a matter of when, not if, you will be able to legally use the self-drive functionality.
   
Proof of concept and viable EVs:

We have touched on the Model 3 in a previous blog but the release of this EV has demonstrated how much the driving public are willing to accept change. Battery technology has made huge strides in the last decade. This has allowed Tesla to extend the range of the vehicles and preserve the life of the battery cells, while also fine-tuning the vehicles with respect to handling, weight, and acceleration. The reality is that far from a vehicle that just happens to be electrically powered, driving a Tesla EV is an experience unlike any other.

Our clients at EV Hire always comment that they cannot fathom how quiet the EVs are. There’s no shuddering or rumbling, the ride is smooth and the internal design and function of the car is a world away from a traditional combustion vehicle. Many doubted that anyone could produce a viable EV for long distance driving. Many more doubted that an EV could be considered a luxury, high performance vehicle. We think it is safe to say that Tesla have silenced the critics on both these counts and many more.   

The environment and changing attitudes:
