Tesla Model Y Second Best-Selling UK New Car In November

Figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) on December the 5th show that the Tesla Model Y was the second best-selling car in the UK in November. In a market that saw nearly 143,000 cars delivered over the course of the month, 4,229 Tesla Model Ys were sold, just over 1,400 behind the best-selling vehicle; the Nissan Qashqai. In the year-to-date, Tesla has sold 24,887 Model Ys to make it the company’s best-selling vehicle in the UK in 2022.
Overall, the new car market continues to suffer from erratic global components supply and registrations for the month were still nearly 9 per cent behind the same month on pre-pandemic 2019.
SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes highlighted the resilience of the UK car market but pointed out that investment in the country’s charging infrastructure needed to accelerate.
“Recovery for Britain’s new car market is back within our grasp, energised by electrified vehicles and the sector’s resilience in the face of supply and economic challenges,” said Mike Hawes. “As the sector looks to ensure that growth is sustainable for the long term, urgent measures are required – not least a fair approach to driving EV adoption that recognises that these vehicles remain more expensive, and measures to compel investment in a charging network that is built ahead of need.
“By doing so we can encourage consumer appetite across the country and accelerate the UK’s journey to net zero.”
In the commercial sector, the sales of Battery Electric Vans reached over 8 per cent of the market, up from 5.5 per cent in 2021. BEV volumes are up 46.5 per cent year-on-year over the past eleven months but concern remains about the public charging infrastructure for commercial vehicles.
