Porsche Launches new all-electric Macan SUV

Porsche has unveiled its second all-electric vehicle since the Taycan was launched nearly five years ago.

The Porsche Macan Electric will be offered in two versions; the 402 bhp Porsche Macan 4 and the Macan Turbo which will have over 50% more power at 630 bhp.

With the Stuttgart manufacturer working towards a future where most of its product range will be all-electric, the Macan represents a big step along the road to fully sustainable transportation for one of the world’s leading sports car manufacturers. Porsche has stated that the new Macan EV will be sold alongside the existing ICE-powered models until the end of 2025, after which the Macan will only be sold as the electric variant.

With the growth in demand for luxury SUVs increasing rapidly in the 2000s, the Cayenne and Macan have been the among the most popular vehicles in Porsche’s line-up since their launches, the Cayenne in 2002 and the Macan over ten years later. The Cayenne and Macan have since gone on to become the highest-selling vehicles in Porsche’s line-up. With more automobile manufacturers now looking to launch their all-electric SUVs, Porsche has once again got ahead of the market.

Although all-electric vehicles themselves offer great ‘green’ credentials, Porsche is looking beyond just the car itself to deliver against its sustainability targets. The new Macan uses low-CO₂ aluminium in the production of its high-voltage battery and in selected wheels, all of which is intended to reduce the CO₂ impact in the production of the car. Additionally, the Leipzig plant where the new Macan is to be built will be powered entirely by electricity produced from sustainable resources. The plant’s heating requirements will be provided by biomethane and biomass.

From a performance standpoint, both new Macans are expected to have a range of between 320 and 380 miles which should be sufficient for most regular users and a significant uplift from Porsche’s initial all-electric offering, the Taycan. With a 0 – 62 mph time of just over five seconds and a top speed of 137 mph for the Macan 4, and its sibling the Macan Turbo reaching 62 mph in less than 3.3 seconds, these vehicles will lack for nothing in performance when compared to their ICE equivalents.
