Mercedes-Benz has revealed the latest addition to its growing electric vehicle range with the announcement of the launch of the EQS SUV.
Based on the its electric vehicle architecture (EVA) platform, the new off-road-ready vehicle will be available in three variants. The entry level will be the EQS 450+ which will offer a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive format with 355bhp and 419lb ft of torque. The mid-range EQS 450 4Matic increases the torque to 590 lb ft while including dual-motor four-wheel-drive. The top of the range will be the EQS 580 4Matic which will have 536bhp.
With the German marque working with urgency towards zero-emission mobility, the company has announced that the new models will be produced in a completely CO₂-neutral way.
The EQS SUV offers four dynamic select modes with Eco, Comfort, Sport and Individual being offered on the 450+ model and an additional Off-Road mode on the 4Matic versions.
Range is expected to average around 370 miles for the EQS 450+ model and between 315 and 381 on the 4Matic variants.
The interiors will feature a 12.3” digital instrumentation panel ahead of the driver with a centrally-mounted 12.8” infotainment display. The top-of-the range 580 will also offer the Hyperscreen in which the front panel of the vehicle is almost a single piece of glass under which sit three screens, allowing the front-seat passenger to control their own infotainment options.
Visually, the Mercedes EQS will feature a blanked-off front grille, a horizontal light bar across the front and angular LED headlights with the optional Digital Light functionality.
Due to arrive by the end of 2022, the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV will provide stiff competition for the Audi e-tron and the BMW iX, along with the plethora of other EV SUVs being planned by US and Chinese manufacturers.
Given Mercedes’ reputation for quality and durability, especially in the corporate and VIP market, there is no doubt that the new EQS SUV will be leading the market as the electrification of private transportation gathers pace.
