MCLAREN 570S HIRE REVIEW BY THE EV STIG

The most astonishing thing when you consider McLaren and what they’ve been able to achieve is 10 years ago, McLaren Automotive were known for the F1. A car that is 25 years old and legendary within it’s ability & legacy. 8 years ago, they re-ignited the flame and begun building road cars to rival the likes of Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche. Well, here we have the flagship Sports Series McLaren ready and available for hire! Now even though McLaren claim the 570s is their ‘sports car’, don’t be fooled by this. The McLaren 570s is an out and out Supercar that really pushes Ferrari and Porsche to up their game! If you want a bit of F1 history, a raw & unfiltered experience behind the wheel of a classic mid-engines V8 then the 570s is the car you need to have a drive in! 

With 562bhp a 0-60mph time of just over 3 sounds (probably closer to 3 seconds flat) and a top speed of 204mph, this car is faster 0-60mph than a Ferrari Enzo and a Porsche Carter’s GT It’ll keep up with the 5.2 V10’s of the Audi R8’s as well as the Huracan’s and in a straight line, will out drag most supercars under £300,000 in 1/4 mile. 

Where to start with the McLaren 570s. Let’s start with the aesthetics. The road presence of the baby sports series can sometimes be mistaken for the £1m halo hypercar, the McLaren P1. It’s happened not just once too! I find myself in traffic with passers-by mistaking the 570s for the P1. If that’s not proof of just how good this car looks on the road, then I don’t know what is. Sitting low, with a wide track & a longer body than the McLaren 650s, it really holds it’s own against the Ferrari 488 or Lamborghini Huracan. Inside, you sit behind the steering wheel fully believing you’re sat in a race car. Positioned over the front wheels, the driving position is bang on perfect for driving hard and precisely. The front wheel arches act is reference points and you really feel like you’re driving a rocket fuelled go-kart. So from the outside, the car is epic, the inside is comfy, beautifully built and set up for track, but also...capable of long distance driving as well as popping up the pub. 

McLaren know how to make a beautiful car, but where they specialise is down to how their vehicles drive. Here is where the EV Stig can get excited. The confidence this car gives you as you push on towards the limit is what makes this such a special drive. These cars are so fast it’s hard to comprehend. The McLaren 570s doesn’t have any active aero but you wouldn’t notice so. Through the corners it’s as flat as ever, and poised ready to dart out of any corner. The McLaren 570s won so many awards when it first came out. As an ‘entry level’ Supercar, this is hard to beat, and is such a beautifully easy car to drive. 

The only interesting element of the car that needs to be discussed, especially being the EV Stig and being lucky enough to drive all sorts of exotic cars, is the McLaren’s soul. McLaren have built one of the best super-sports cars in the world. A car that is more precise than a Ferrari, just as crazy as a Lamborghini, and as punctual as a Porsche around the race track. But with fresh blood, comes a lack of history, and maybe that’s what is missing from this McLaren. McLaren Automotive haven’t had the opportunity to build a strong and consistent legacy yet, and unfortunately they haven’t been able to find their character. The engine block twin turbo’d is a phenomenal set up combined with their chassis and drivetrain. Everything is so precise, and as you’d expect. Who knows, I haven’t been able to answer the question and I’ve driven a few of these majestic beasts. Come and drive this great Supercar, and try and answer this question!
