EV Stig here again ready to take a look at one of the most interesting cars to be launched in recent years, the Bentley Bentayga. Bentley’s first attempt at an SUV. The SUV world is a lucrative one with the likes of Porsche, Jaguar and Range Rover reaping the rewards of being so dominant. Bentley wanted a slice of this pie, and thought they could rival the Range Rovers and Porsche’s and provide a certain type of person with the ultimate in British luxury. 

Bentley, based up North in Crewe, pride themselves in taking their time in creating their products. Ensuring maximum development has taken place down to the smallest details. It’s an impressive set up, and considering their production output, you do tend to see one or two Bentley’s driving around so it’s safe to say they’re popular! Even if they do limit production output to ensure levels of quality are met. As with a lot of what we see on the road today, Bentley sit’s underneath the Volkswagen Group umbrella benefiting from a pretty elaborate parts sharing scheme, but let’s not sit here comparing Audi interiors to Bentley’s because it’s be honest...there’s nothing to compare!! 

Let’s dive straight into the exterior of the Bentley. Splitting opinions since day one, the Bentayga is traditionally Bentley, featuring a large chrome front grill, oversized wheels and rear shoulders sitting over the real wheels to make any body builder look inadequate. I truly believe our brains and eyes have become so accustom to sleek, Coupe Bentley’s that we’re just struggling to adjust our taste to a new shape coming off the Bentley production line. I agree with some people, in unique specifications, the Bentayga can look a bit garish and bold, but in the correct colour scheme it because a totally different, quite elegant car. However, seeing one on full chat steaming into your rear view mirrors is intimidating in whatever colour it is. And that’s when you come in. Because you’ll be in the driver’s seat. Simple things like; the sound of the door as you open and close it, the feeling of the door handle as your hand wraps round it. The combination of chromes, leather among other textiles work perfectly and as soon as you press ‘Engine Start’, you realise you’re currently about to pilot something that seriously means business. Welcome, to the drive! 

Driving the Bentayga is a whirlwind of emotions. At first, you see yourself in a totally different light. You feel strong, powerful, healthy and happy. The effortless nature of the engine whisks you away at a speed you can control. Pull away slowly, and you’ll feel closer to a king than a racing driver, but plant your right foot flat to the floor, and you’ll feel as powerful as Lewis Hamilton in a Formula 1 car. The Bentley magic kicks in almost instantly, with 100% torque delivery coming in very early down the Rev Range. This sheds any Bentayga weight you were worried about and propels you down the road at serious speed. The car around you shrinks the faster you go, and you realise you’re driving a go kart. The sensation of the Bentayga transforming from a lumpy SUV into a neat little sports car is astonishing and one you don’t expect, yet if you fancy a B-road Sunday drive you really will keep up with most supercars. The only thing worth mentioning on the Bentayga that let’s it down is it’s air suspension. Slow, calm and relaxing driving works in it’s favour. You don’t feel a thing, and as the name suggests, it’s like driving on air. But pedal on, and pick up the speed and the car becomes a little bit wobbly through corners. It’s rare you’ll find many Bentayga’s cruising through the countryside as most of them are in London, so don’t feel like you’re missing out if you don’t fancy the country roads. Through town and on motorways it is one of the best cars in it’s class. As you’d expect. In fact, the Bentayga exceeds expectations when you drive it. So I’m not quite sure what you’re waiting for.
