2021 EV BATTERY DEPLOYMENT SET FOR 100% ANNUAL GROWTH
As if more proof of the rapid evolution of the global EV market was required, independent research and advisory service Adamas Intelligence has released figures that demonstrate the phenomenal growth of battery deployment for EVs over the last 12 months.
Data from the company shows that 31.7GWhs of battery capacity was deployed globally in all newly sold xEVs (Battery EVs, Plug-In Hybrid EVs and Hybrid EVs) in September 2021 which is over double the capacity deployed in the same month in 2020.
Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL), a Chinese battery manufacturer and technology, supplied over a third of the capacity with Korea’s LG Energy Solution in second with 19%. 37% of CATL’s battery output went into Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y production, demonstrating the importance of Asia in EV technology development and supply.
Adamas Intelligence is now forecasting that over 100GWhs will deployed in the fourth quarter. If the forecast is correct, then total battery deployment for 2021, at around 300GWhs, will be more than double that of 2020.
Tesla can now produce 450,000 vehicles at its Chinese Gigafactory in Shanghai with rumours circulating that it is looking to acquire a second site.
